A Heritage Lottery Funded Project
I have project managed the Brompton 200 Heritage Lottery Fund supported project. Part of the project has been
this exhibition, which has been co-curated by members of the Brompton History Research Group and myself. Itfeatures items from the Royal Engineers Museum’s stores which have neverpreviously been on display including the ‘Chatham Gates’ and a letter fromCharles Dickens. On loan for the exhibition include number of items from theFreemasons Museum in London, deeds from some of the houses in Brompton andobjects that were found in the walls of 12 Prospect Row.

The exhibition tells the civilian’s story and looks at howBrompton has been influenced by the military, in particular the RoyalEngineers, over the past 200 years. From churches to pubs all aspects ofBrompton life are covered in
the exhibition.

A magnetic map of Brompton dominates one wall of theexhibition, on which visitors can leave their own memories of the village.Visitors are also encouraged to visit the accompanying website www.bromptonhistory.org.uk wherethey can read many of the stories which could not be included in the exhibition, leave comments and upload their own stories and images.

A number of photographs from the Royal Engineers Museum’sarchives are also on display in the exhibition, including a photograph ofSappers outside The Cannon pub at the turn of the century. Earlier in June thisphotograph was recreated with members of McPhie Troop, Royal Engineers and thecurrent landlady Pauline. This photograph sits alongside the original in theexhibition.
